Last week my washing machine broke. Ugh!! a week without a washing machine is annoying. Especially annoying when you use cloth diapers, cloth wipes and unpaper towels. I never realized how much cloth I actually use. I had to put David into disposable diapers because I couldn't have his cloth diapers sitting in urine for a week. I took the dirty ones to my local laundramat and when I brought them home, I put them back in the diaper pail so that I could give them a good washing once my machine was fixed. I had some disposables from Hurricane Irene. We knew that we'd be losing electricity. I didn't have to use them that long, so we still had a large box in our garage. At first, I kinda liked the disposables. I liked how trim they were. David's clothing fit much better with them. Then he went poo in them and I REALLY liked throwing the poo in the garbage. Can you have too many cloth diapers??? Do I really need enough diapers for a week? The answer to both questions are "NO". 1. I don't think I can have too many diapers. I don't usually start potty training my children till they're closer to 3. So all my diapers will get used...even if I've got 50. With a large rotation of diapers I don't have to worry about running out of diapers or wearing out my diapers so quickly. 2. I don't need enough diapers for a week. I would NEVER let my diapers sit in urine for that long. I usually wash every other day and sometimes EVERY Day. The longer you let your diapers sit in the urine and bacteria, the shorter the life span of the diaper. Urine will eat through all your PUL and Elastic. I've had more than one mom ask me, "How do you sew with little ones?". I say, "It's easy, I tape them to the wall.". Of course i'm joking, I wish it were that easy. I do have a house to take care of, a 3 y/o and an 8 month old. Finding time to sew for my cloth diaper business can be tough. I also like to make my daughter's dresses, my son's diapers and not to mention other family members. Needless to say, my "To-do" List is never ending. How do I do it?? How do I organize my time and sew ?? Here's all of my secrets..... 1. I pray...this may not seem important but when i'm focused on the Lord , He orders my days and I find that my priorities stay on the right track and my days are more productive. 2. I keep my expectations reasonable. In other words, If i'm sewing with both my little ones, I don't expect to get 45 minutes uninterrupted. That's NOT going to happen. Here we are starting week 2 of Sarah's pre-k. The first week went very well. Sarah LOVES to use shaving cream and write her numbers. I'm still not sure if she's a lefty or a righty. She does write with both. I think she's leaning more towards the right side but i'm not 100% yet. She also loved doing the "Number sort". This worked out well because she could recongnize more of her numbers than I realized. Once she got to "3" she said to me, "What number is this?", I said, "3" and she never asked again. She got it!! This week she's sick. I said to her today, "Are you going to be well enough to do your school work?" and with a big grin she said, "YES"..then she wiped her runny nose with the back of her hand. Have you ever had days that never seem to end? I got alot done but it was exhausting. I went to church today and was able to listen to the entire sermon because David was good. What a blessing!! Then I spent some time talking to the Pastor's wife about couponing. This is something i'm looking forward to getting in to. I don't want to go the the extreme of those mom's i've seen on the show but not having to pay for some toilettries definately sounds GREAT!! We came home from church, fed David. My husband fed Sarah. I started laundry, cleaning and then a friend came over to help me video a sewing tutorial. This was more work than I thought. I also DON'T like seeing myself on camera. I've got 75lbs to lose and have only lost 5lbs. Hurricane...That's not typically a word that you hear up here in the Northeast. Here in NY we usually get nothing more than a tropical storm and where I am upstate, we just get wind and rain. This past weekend we had Hurricane Irene come through...Lets just say the song "Good night Irene" was never more sung. She whipped through the NY and tri-state area with high-winds and tons of rain. It was the rain that bothered most. Homes that didn't usually flood had water damage, yard damage, etc. We had minimal damage. Our landscaped area in front had all the mulch washed away. Not a big deal at all. We are so blessed. No water damage, no wind damage. We did lose our electricity, this was something that I knew would happen and was prepared for. Or was I? I thought I was prepared...I thought I could handle it. I was wrong. NO electricity and having a 3 y/o and a 6 month old is tough!! It seems that children know instinctly when we've had enough. David has this sense....Today he was crying and I had to put him down. I said, "Ok, that's it...you can cry". I put him down, he seemed to understand that I was at my wits end, looked up at me and smiled from ear to ear. Which of course sent joy coursing through my entire body. Sheeesh. I love being a mom and especially having another chance is sooo exciting, but I do feel it physically. My allergies are acting up so that is especially hard for me. When I was younger, I had all the energy, never got sick..it was perfect. Too bad my priorities were wrong, my parenting techniques were not consistent and my patience..well, I didn't have any. I've got patience, priorities, love for doing what I do...just not exactly the energy.
